Wooden Topographical Carvings

  • Sale
  • Regular price $29.95

Unique pieces of art from dead trees in the forests of Hawaii. Each carving is painstakingly matched to the piece of wood for the most dramatic effect. The artist only uses old, dead trees recovered from the forest to carve works of art. No two pieces are the same, as each one is made with a lot of love.

"With a special permit in hand, I retrieve the wood from the forest where it would otherwise rot. Some of the trees were planted over 100 years ago, making this art a century in the making. The type of wood that I use most often is Juniperus Barbadensis, which is one of the rarest living trees in the world. There are less than 20 living specimens on the planet, and they're all in St. Lucia on one mountain peak. This wood, with an aroma that's heavenly, is impossible to procure anywhere else, due to its over-forestation at the beginning of the 20th century. Reforestation efforts are under way to bring back this "pencil cedar" from the brink of extinction in St. Lucia." - Tony Barnhill (Artist)
